How We Attended Two Different Conferences Sitting Side by Side – Episode 5 Transcription
So, in today’s episode, we are going to share with you how we actually attended two different conferences sitting side-by-side.
So, we went to this incredible conference. It was awesome. It was a couple of weeks ago now in Nashville.
Love Nashville. How many of you guys have been in Nashville and just love it, right?
Go Predators, the-
No, we’re not going that far.
We’re Jets fans! I like Nashville Predators. They’re nice colors.
Anyways, so, we attended this conference a couple of weeks ago and for those of you guys who’ve ever been to a conference, I don’t know if you’ve ever shared this with the person sitting beside you, but when the speaker was up on stage and he gave everyone this book, which is really awesome. He was, like, “Okay, write down this. What did you get from this,” the part of the thing that he was sharing. So we’re sitting there, we’re writing this stuff down, and I’m like, we’ve been married forever and so, I thought, I’m like there’s no way he’s going to have something different than what I just wrote because, we’re sitting right here, right beside each other.
Yeah, we were. We’re literally listening to the exact same speaker, ask the exact same questions and we started writing things out that were completely different.
Like 1000% different. I’m like, how did you even get that from this?
Because at one point, the guys goes, “Hey, turn to your neighbor,” and it can be anyone you know and, of course, we’re introverts, so we’re like, well-
Oh, so, yeah. I just don’t even play that way.
We don’t listen to that rule. We’re just going to turn to ourselves instead, that’s going to be good. And so anyway, Erin shared her thing and then I shared my thing, and we’re like-
I’m like, did you just hear the same thing I heard?
And then we realized, we didn’t.
We didn’t. And so it made me just give us a light-bulb moment that so many of you, even if you listen to this particular podcast, and say you share it with someone, which I hope you do, they’re going to get something completely different out of it. It reminded me of when someone told me years ago, they’re like, you experience colors different than someone else. Your blue is different than someone else’s blue.
Is it?
Yeah.
That’s crazy. And I’m wearing blue-blocking glasses, which you can’t see.
You are. He looks like Bono.
You can go see on our Instagram, you want to see what these new glasses look like? I think they’re pretty cool.
Anyway, so the reason we wanted to share this with you today, is that you can be in an event, or you can be watching a Facebook Live, or you can be reading a certain blog post, or YouTube video, and you can be like, well, maybe everybody knows this. Or, you’re struggling with what you want to share with people on your social media. Maybe you’re reading a personal development book, and you think, oh, well, everyone knows this. Then I want you to stop that thinking. That thinking has to stop. And if you want to tell yourself, oh, I’ve got all these amazing things, I don’t know what to share.
I want you to think that you’re unique perspective on what you have been reading or learning, or listening to, or attending, is still incredibly unique and powerful to you, in the way that you put it out in the world, is going to be received differently than if they’ve ever heard it before.
Yeah, I heard before someone say that, if there’s a conversation going on with 100 people in a room, one person’s talking at the front, there are literally, one person’s talking, there’s still 100 conversations going on, because every single person in that room, is interpreting the words that are coming out of that speaker’s mouth, completely differently. And I always thought about that, because I presented, I think the biggest one was 7000 people, and I was looking out into the room, and there’s just so many people. And at that point, and we’re trying to give you the background in this podcast of what you don’t see.
So, the way that it works when you go up and present, you’re at the back of the room, you can’t see any of the people yet. And then once you hit the stage, there’s these blinding lights, right?
You can only see the first five rows.
So if you’re ever worried about public speaking with lots of people, don’t worry about it.
You just see five rows of people.
You see like five rows and that’s it. So just make sure that’s your family and friends that are going to cheer and laugh at all your jokes.
Unless that makes you stressed out, then make sure they’re strangers.
Yes, that is true, because I get more stressed. One time my dad was up front, and I was freaking out. And Erin was like, “That was terrible.”
I never say it’s terrible.
I was like, “What are you talking about?” “It was good, but your dad was there, and you were obviously nervous.” But my point is, there were 7000 conversations going on in that room, with me, just talking. And, what’s cool about that, and what I wanted to point out is that even for you, my big point on this whole thing is, even for you, if you read a book the second time, you’re going to get something different out of it. If you listen to this exact same podcast today, and you listen to it again a year from today, you’re going to get something completely different out of it.
And I think that plays into the whole secret topic, which we’ll talk about in another episode. But whatever your mindset, I think is at for that moment, is what you’re going to get out of it. So if you’re looking for something, like you’re looking for a reason to work on your relationship, you could be listening to a topic completely different about business, but you’re going to catch on to the one thing when he talks about the relationship with the spouse. And you’re going to get out of that whole thing, you’re going to get the relationship tips and all those things. But if you go into a relationship session, and you’re listening about relationships, but you’re really more focused on making an income or money, you’re going to get something completely different out of it.
So what I want to add in here was, the state that you go into something, is going to really drive what you get out of it.
Right, you know, changing your state is such a taboo subject that nobody really talks about aside from, unless you’ve been to a Tony Robbins event. Changing your state is something we actually have control over. And we talk a lot about this to our kids, because if they’re in a negative mood, or they just had, maybe had a bad day, and they’re just focusing on the negative things, we do this little exercise with them. So, we’ll tell them, we’re sitting in the car and we’re like, “Okay, so, I want you to look outside the window, and I want you to find all the red cars.” So if you’re driving your car, I mean, pay attention please, to the road. But, you’re going to see all the red cars, right? So we ask them to count how many red cars.
And then after a minute or so, I’ll say, “Okay, so how many blue cars were there?” And because they’re not focusing on the blue, they’re like, “I don’t know. One?” And so this is a huge thing, is that what you focus on, you find, or you see, or you create. And that has a huge part in your state. So, how do we change our state Miguel?
How do we change our state? Well, there’s a whole bunch of ways that work, and some that don’t work so good.
If you’ve been following us for a while, we poked fun at someone.
At somebody. Who we love.
Yeah, and we do love him, but-
Well known author, huge performance coach [crosstalk]
But we were at an event with him and he’s like, “Okay, so here’s how you change your state.” And he’s like, “Just imagine you feel happy.” And I was like, “What?”
Zero to 10, what are you at right now? All right, like you’re a two. Okay now [crosstalk]
He’s like, “Can you get higher?”
Now, just think you’re at a 10. Just think hard, you’re a 10.
I’m like dude, I’m not at a 10.
And the next day after, we had a huge conference thing going on, the next day we were really tired. And so I’m like, “Hey Erin, we should do that exercise.” So like, “Hey Erin, what are you at?” She’s like “Two.” I’m like, “Okay, what are you at now?”
Because he’s like tired is a choice. I’m like, okay, I don’t know anyone who’s been [crosstalk]
It is a choice, choosing to be tired.
Well this the thing, so I don’t know any of you, if you’re parents and you have a newborn, I don’t know, tired is not a choice at that point.
It’s not really.
No. It’s like a state of being. Okay, so let’s talk about changing your state. What can you actually do to change your state, so that you’re in the right state to learn what you need to learn at that moment in time?
Okay, so two things. We’ll talk about energy in a second, but the number one thing I have to say is you’ve got to get clear on what you want. You really like, every situation in life, whether you’re going to meet someone, shake someone’s hand, whether you’re going into a session that’s going to go an hour long, you might be tired, it doesn’t matter, forget that for a second, and just think, what do you want to get out of this? And it can’t just be, “Well, I paid money to be in this conference, so I’m going to get something out of it. I’m going to sit down and have a coffee.” It’s got to be, what do I want to get out of this session?
And I always look at my business, and where we’re heading in our business, and so when we were at this conference, every single session, I would look at whose the speaker that’s coming up next? And what do I want to get out of this session? What do I want to learn? And even the ones that didn’t interest me, I was like, okay, well what do I really want to get out of this? And while you don’t know what the speaker is going to say, but if you think to yourself, okay, well I really need to learn, for example, how to be more confident, right? And then the speaker starts speaking, maybe sometimes I’ll take notes on how the speaker is presenting, and not even just necessarily the topic that he’s delivering. So there’s always something you can get out of these things.
That was the biggest thing that I noticed, between our differences in our notes is, what he needed at the time was completely something different than I needed at the time. So we’re reflected in what we wrote down. So one thing I want to add in, and then we’ll go back to the changing your state part, is that, sometimes people get trapped in seeing a large room of people. So you’ve been to an event or a conference, or whatever, and you’re like, well, there’re 7000 other people here, or 5000 other people here, or 100 other people here, and they’re going to share all the same thing, and my thing is not new.
So I want to make sure that you understand exactly what we just said for the last 10 minutes, it is new, because it’s through your eyes. And no one has your eyes but you. So if you’re ever struggling with that, like everyone else has already talked about this, everyone’s already done these challenges, everyone’s already done this blog post, or this Live video, or this Insta-story, it hasn’t happened until you’ve done it.
Yeah, so the second thing that you want to do, so one is you want to make sure you focus, what do you want to get out of the day, the session? That in itself, that tip, will transform the next event that you attend. The number two thing that I’d say you have to get out of it, I’ll let Erin talk about this more is, you’ve got to change your state physically. Like you physically need to change your state. Everyone is going to be tired at some point, whether it’s 5:00 PM, some people get tired later on, or whether it’s in the morning, some people aren’t morning people, and they’re just tired in the morning.
So there’re things that we tend to do, that will ensure that we’re at least going to be present and physically available to comprehend and listen and take action and take notes. And so, how do we do that?
So I think if you’ve ever been to an event or a conference, you have the MC, he gets you to stand up and touch people. I hate that part.
Stand up and touch everybody you know.
Yeah, like massage people. I’m like, no, and I won’t. So, I mean, if you’re ever beside me, it’s not I don’t love you, it’s just-
You’re not getting a massage.
No. No, no. And I’ll make sure I sit beside someone I know. So, one of the things though, it is standing up, right? So there’s a lot of research that has come into play in the last couple of years about, if you have an iWatch? How many of you guys have an iWatch, and it makes you stand up every hour? It’s because every 53 minutes, your body has to stand up in order to stay alert. So no matter what you’re doing, you should stand up every 53 minutes, and do something with your body, whether it’s jump around? Maybe if you’re in a corporate job, and you don’t want to do that at your desk, go to the bathroom, and jump around. But that’s going to create so much more energy for you to be more attentive, more focused, and more engaged with the task that you’re doing.
Yeah, exactly. I think typically people will just grab the coffee, and that actually will give you energy for a total of about five, 10 minutes. And then you’re going to be tired. So I think moving around, if we have a conference, one of the big things that I like to do, is I like to workout. I’ll go to the gym and typically, at a conference, the gym is empty.
Yes, it is.
It’s like dead.
Unless it’s a fitness conference.
Right, but there’re going to be a conference with 5000 people, you go to the gym, there’s four people in there. And it’s funny, it’s a high performance conference on how to get the most out of your life. And then you’re at the gym and there’s five people in there. And people forget that workout element part, right? And so working out, they’ve proven, it gives you so much endorphins, so many chemical reactions are happening in your body, that you literally become alive. You wake up your entire body just sweating it out. So I would say, if you can, before you attend a conference, before you get there at 8:00 AM, maybe get up a little earlier, work out. And if you’re not a morning person, it’s never going to work for you.
It’s never going to work for me.
Like what we did, is we left the … We had a two-hour lunch break, so instead of going and sitting and carb-loading, and popping, and all that stuff, we said, you know what, let’s just go to the gym. We’re like, oh, we’re tired. We’re like, nope, let’s do it. Let’s just go to the gym, let’s go.
Took some pre-workout.
Did some pre-workout. This is a huge tip, you’ve got to have pre-workout.
Because, if you’re tired, and it’s not a choice-
It’ll make you do it.
It makes you do it.
And by the way, pre-workout is very different than coffee. Because coffee will only last five, 10 minutes. Pre-workout will last you an hour. So anyway, you go there, you get to the gym, you work out, you do your thing. And even if it’s just 15 minutes of running on the treadmill, or whatever you can muster to get out, it will change your state. There is no way you cannot change your state by not doing this. Like you do this, you will change your state, you will be more active, more present, you’ll get back to the conference, and you’re going to thank us later.
And I think one of the things that people overlook is the power of that workout, what it can do for you in terms of your eating choices. So, I know for me personally, I’m like, oh, maybe I feel like having something not so fueling my body-ish, for lunch or something like that, when I’m at a conference. If I work out, I am more inclined to eat more on point, because I’ve already put the work into my body.
And the other thing that we do when we’re at conferences, and this was unintentional, because Miguel doesn’t like to eat during the day, or conferences.
I’m at a conference man, I’m in the zone.
He starves me.
It is go time.
I used to get so hangry and so, what we started to do is more intentional fasting, right? So we’re going to fast and it actually creates more clarity. So, there is a whole science behind it. I don’t suggest you just not eat.
I was like, whoa, we’re going to go into the whole fasting topic?
No, we are not going to go into the fasting topic, but it is something that can increase your focus, your awareness, but it has to be done properly. And I’m not going to go into it now. But it is one of the things that we do when we’re at conferences.
Yeah, because a lot of conferences it’s going to be all the junk food. So I would say, even if, get some snacks, throw them in your bag, that’s what we do.
Go to the grocery store.
Go to the grocery store.
Or order some groceries to your room, and just make sure you have stuff on-hand, because you will make better choices.
Yeah, so that’s all I wanted to share about attending conferences. Anything else you want to add to that?
No, I just think that, remember that your story’s unique, the way that you see it. And the way that you’re going to tell it. And don’t let your fears of other people having the same story, prevent you from sharing your unique view on things.
And the last thing I’ll add in is, if there’s anything that you’ve ever really loved, like that speaker you really loved, that conference you really attended, that book you loved, I’m going to challenge you today. I guess we should end with a challenge.
Yeah, let’s do it. Let’s put you in the hot seat.
Me in the hot seat.
Yeah.
Okay, so here’s my challenge for you today. I want you to grab one of your most favorite books you’ve ever read, or the most favorite podcast you’ve ever listened to, or the YouTube video of the best presentation you’ve ever seen. I want you to grab one of those things. And I want you to rewatch it. But before you watch it, I want you to be intentional about what you’re about to do. And I want you to focus on what is it that you want to get out of this session that you’re about to listen to, watch, or read.
And the last challenge, if you want bonus marks, because my kids love bonus marks. If you want bonus marks, before you do this, I want you to work out. And then I want you to consume it again. I bet you, I bet you if you do this challenge today, when you consume that content, you’re going to get something completely different out of it. And, if you add in the bonus of the workout, I feel like you’re going to take massive action after.
Yeah, I love it. I think it’s great.
